Libertarian Freedom in an Unfree World 2016

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably asked yourself, “Is it truly possible to have freedom in an unfree world?”

Harry Browne the Libertarian presidential candidate in 1996, wrote a book titled, How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World. His work inspired me to write this article.

To paraphrase what Harry Browne said in a video:

While it’s not possible to ever live your life 100% free. Most people settle to live quiet lives of desperation and only live their lives 10% to 30% free, when it is possible for most people to live their lives 70% to 90% free.

I wanted to dispel the myth that Libertarians can’t win.

While a large percentage of people agree with the libertarian philosophy and Libertarian Party platform, many of them always cite their reason for not voting libertarian is because they falsely believe that libertarians can’t win. So they continue to vote for the lessor of two evils among the current two party system.

Libertarians are in fact winning and here’s the data to back it up:

Politico’s 2016 Presidential Election Results

Data was used to show that the Libertarian Party had enough votes to disrupt the two party system in 10 states for a total of 113 electoral votes. Which may have altered the Presidential election results.

Libertarian Party List of Elected Officials

Shows there are 231 elected Libertarian officials in 34 states. While most are local positions, we do have one US Congressman, Justin Amash from Michigan who is a Libertarian Party member.

Ranked Choice Voting

Ranked choice voting will take place in Maine for the 2020 elections, which is good because people can actually vote for the party of their choice, without the fear of “wasting their vote.”

Ranked choice voting will also be on the 2020 ballot in Alaska and Massachusetts. If passed this will effect future elections going forward, but not the 2020 election.

So while Libertarians haven’t won a presidential election, yet, it doesn’t mean they aren’t winning.

The fact is they are winning through disruption of the 2 party system and having influence on political change.
